Grace Hopper was an American computer scientist and possible member of the Tessera. She was a creative and brilliant woman who popularized the idea of computer "languages" that led to the formulation of a very high level computer language still used today, "COBOL".
Grace Hopper attempted to join the Navy during World War II but was denied because she was 34 years old and that was deemed too old. She enlisted in the reserves and worked there as a computer scientist. She retired from the Navy at age 60 in accordance with Naval regulations but was allowed to remain on active duty for a few years after her retirement. Hopper was named rear admiral by special President appointment making her one of very few female admirals.
Grace Hopper’s contributions to the Tessera include her immense computer talent and her relationship with younger members. Hopper is quoted as saying, "The most important thing I've accomplished, other than building the compiler, is training young people. They come to me, you know, and say, 'Do you think we can do this?' I say, "Try it." And I back 'em up. They need that. I keep track of them as they get older and I stir 'em up at intervals so they don't forget to take chances” (Particular Passions: Grace Murray Hopper, 2012). Hopper was able to help the group evade S by creating a system of lights and structure in the tower that only someone creative and analytical could solve. S is neither of those things, all S wants to do is to drain the world of those two important character traits and Grace Hopper did her part twofold to stave off S and his evil plans.
